Jaipur (जयपुर), also popularly known as the Pink City, is the capital of Rajasthan state, India. Historically rendered as Jeypore, Jaipur is the former capital of the princely state of Jaipur. Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, the ruler of Amber, the city today has a population of more than 5 million residents.Jaipur is famous for the marble articles both in domestic market as well as in International market. Not only domestic buyers but the foreign buyers used to come to buy marble stone carving articles statues, sculptures etc round the year. But it is also an irony that, in Jaipur rural area, only a few marble carving cluster CHHITOLI in Virat nagar,jaipur.
There are prominent and huge Carving Clusters in Chhitoli, situated in Panchayat Samiti Virat Nagar, Jaipur or Bairath, which is nearly 90 Km from the District HQ and 10 Km from the PS HQ. The Jaipur-Delhi National High Way No. 8 is 8 Km from the Chitoli cluster. The road connectivity of all these with Chitoli is very good. The total population of Chhitoli is 3200 and, out of them, approximate 65% (around 2100) are of Adi Gaur Brahmins engaged in marble stone carving activities. Most of them are Sharma and are using Black Marble procured from Bhesalana and nearly mines for the statues, articles etc. Besides this, around 480-500 residents are of S.C. Balai and 320-350 are Gurjars. The remaining persons are baniya 256-275 and 64-75 are other communities.
Out of the total population of Chhitoli of Virat Nagar, nearly 65% are Adi Gaur Brahmins and they are manufacturing the black marble carving artifacts. Major objectives of Chhitoli cluster is to preserve their great tradition and earn their lively hood through this activity.
All the marble artisans of the Chhitoli cluster makes good statues, Sculpture, Hindu Murties and artifacts themselves and some of them have graduated into a good agent or salesman brings orders directly from market. A very few people of chitoli are in Government service and other activities. But nearly 75-80% Chhitoli people’s main objective is the marble stone carving and to make Statues of SHIVA, VISHNU, SHIVA LINGA, LAXMI, PARVATI and other HINDU DEVATAS. They earn money by keeping their great tradition alive.
